Enjoy the ultimate holiday in the heart of England’s peaceful rolling countryside known as the Cotswolds (since Shakespeare named it in Richard II). Its boundaries spill over six counties, though the majority lies in Gloucestershire. A 12-week share is available in our Cotswolds property in the heart of Tetbury – a cozy flat just steps from everything you want to see and do. Here is a taste of what you’ll find.
You’ll want to see Tetbury’s 1665 Market house, left, which occupies the centre of this historic wool market town. In much the same way that Big Ben is an icon of London, the Market Hall is an icon of Tetbury.
Tip a few with the locals in the cozy Snooty Fox, with its large, copper-domed inglenook fireplace. And, yes, there is a fox – or was, I should say. A large stuffed fox who ran off to travel the world some years ago and hasn’t been seen since, but does send postcards now and then.
Once one of the humbler parts of town, the Chipping Steps, of medieval origin, descend by a series of steps three flights to the bottom of the hill at Cirencester Road.
Its cottages were originally occupied by such people as carpenters, masons, and cordwainers (shoemakers) and other common labourers seeking work in the town. This small cobbled lane is one of the oldest sections of Tetbury.
St. Mary’s Church
The Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin has the fourth highest spire in England. The church has a fine and varied group of bell ringers ranging from teenagers to octogenarians – age is no barrier to enjoying this ancient custom. You’ll hear them practicing Friday evenings for Sunday service and be happy to know visitors and new learners are always welcome.
Hunting for Antiques?
Did you know that the Cotswolds offer the broadest choice of antiques outside London? Tetbury, in particular, is well known for its 25 antique shops and its close proximity to Prince Charles’s residence of Highgrove. The range of shops and unique dealers make hunting a pleasure. Get to know these wonderful shops and neighborhoods on the very picturesque back streets.
A Taste of Tetbury
The town has a wonderful variety of bistros, cafes, perfect English pubs, restaurants and tea shops, offering all manerr of gustatory delights and celebrating exquisite local fare from the Duchy. You’ll be spoilt for choice. The eighth annual Tetbury Food & Drink Festival takes place this September 18-21, 2014.
